    The Institute of Physical Chemistry actively participates in the establishment of the European Photocatalysis Federation and the coordination of the corresponding research activities in Greece.



    The 6th Summer School on Methods in Micro-Nanotechnology and Nanobiotechnology will be held in Athens, Greece September 13 - 17, 2010.  

    The Summer School is co-organized by the Institutes of Physical Chemistry, Microelectronics,  Radioisotopes & Radiodiagnostic Products and Materials Science,  NCSR Demokritos, in collaboration with the Foundation for Biomedical Research of the Academy of Athens.

    The Summer School  is co-sponsored by the project, Marie Curie ITN CYCLON  ( )  coordinated by the  Institute of Physical Chemistry.

    Steriotis Theodore

    Dr. Theodore Steriotis' research priorities focus in the synthesis and characterization of a wide range of porous materials and membranes (inorganic, polymer and hybrid) for environmental, energy and industrial applications. He has extended experience in experimental techniques in the field of sorption, diffusion and (X-ray or Neutron) scattering as well as in-situ combinations of the techniques (e.g. sorption with scattering). Significant efforts have also been devoted to numerical simulation for the modeling of materials and processes by either molecular or mesoscopic techniques.


    In the last five year Dr. Steriotis' group has been very active in the field of solid hydrogen storage. Specific emphasis has been placed on the:

    • Development and characterization of novel carbon structures (e.g. CNTs, carbon cones, templated carbons, carbon foams, carbon aerogels etc.),
    • Investigation of carbon based hybrids (e.g. metal doped carbons, carbon infiltrated complex hydrides etc) as well as the
    • Study of Metal-Organic-Frameworks (MOFs) by means of hydrogen sorption with in-situ neutron diffraction.


    Recent funded projects

    • Integrated Project NESSHY (Novel Efficient Solid Storage for Hydrogen, Proj. Number: 518271) partly funded by FP6 (EC Funding for NCSRD: 890.000 euro, Assistant coordinator Th. Steriotis). NESSHY congregates all current European actions on solid storage of hydrogen.
    • STREP HYCONES (Hydrogen Storage in Carbon Cones, Contract No: NMP3-CT-2006-032970) partly funded by FP6 (EC Funding for NCSRD: 334.000 €, Coordinator Th. Steriotis). The project was recently concluded and aimed at the development and H2 storage assessment of a new advanced material, namely carbon cones.
    • Small to medium scale collaborative project NANOHY (Novel Nanocomposites for Hydrogen Storage Applications, Grant Agreement No 210092), funded by FP7 (EC funding for NCSRD: 214.250). The project started on January 2008 and will be concluded by the end of 2011. The main aim is to develop and assess the Hydrogen storage properties of complex hydrides-carbon nanocomposites.


    Dr. Theodore Steriotis is:

    • Leader of the project “Hydrogen storage in metal doped carbons” of the IEA (International Energy Agency) Task 22.
    • Head of Scientific Council of the Inst. Physical Chemistry, NCSR “Demokritos”.
    • Member of the Helmoltz-Zentrum-Berlin (former Hahn-Meitner Institute) Scientific Committee
    • Invited Reviewer of European Commission (FP6, FP7), Science and Technology Foundation- Portugal (Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia - FCT) – Research Promotion Foundation of Cyprus, European Science Foundation (ESF-EUROCORES)
    • Greek National Contact Point for FP7 Theme 6 “Environment (including Climate Change)
