Irene Moustakali-Mavridis studied at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, where she obtained the Degree of Chemistry in 1970. During 1969-1970, she worked as a post-graduate student in NRC “Demokritos” with C. Zioudrou in asymmetric synthesis. Subsequently she enrolled in the graduate program of Michigan State University, USA, where she earned a PhD in Physical Chemistry (1975). Her thesis, under the supervision of Professor Alexander Tulinsky, was the Structure Determination of 2-keto-3-deoxy-6-Phosphogluconate Aldolase (Pseudomonas Putida) at 3.5A Resolution. She joined the Institute of Physical Chemistry of NCSR “Demokritos” in 1976 as a researcher. During the years 1976, 1978, 1979-1980 and 1987, she has been a visiting research scientist at Michigan State University for time periods of 3-12 months. Her research interests include molecular structure and organization, supramolecular chemistry with emphasis on cyclodextrin inclusion complexes and structure-function correlations, as well as macromolecular crystallography. Since 1993 she has been Researcher A. During the years 1995-2011 she was director of the Laboratory of Structural and Supramolecular Chemistry. After retirement in October 2011, Dr. Mavridis remains an active emeritus member of the same laboratory.
